This comes from the tale of Oisín and Niamh in Tír na nÓg. In this story, Oisín, son of Finn Mac Cumhaill, and a member of the Fianna, the legendary group of warriors, falls in love with a beautiful woman, Niamh. She was the daughter of the king of Tír na nÓg, or the land of eternal youth. Together, Niamh and Oisín leave Ireland for Tír na nÓg, where they spend three hundred years together. Oisín, not knowing so much time has passed, wants to return home to Ireland because he misses his friends, family and old life, even knowing he will never be allowed to return to Tír na nÓg. However, when returns, he finds that everyone he loves has gone, and turns into an old man. He is then brought to Saint Patrick for comfort, and passes peacefully of old age.
