Gift in Your Will and Philantrophy

Gift in Your Will: Why Leave a Gift in My Will to the Museum of Childhood Ireland?

We are funded by voluntary contributions. We have a wonderful voluntary board and team who work tirelessly for, and truly believe in this project for Ireland. BUT, we need your HELP. A home for the museum is needed. We aim for value for money, and complete transparency in the delivery of the museum. Having looked at lots of buildings, either location, restoration costs or ethical issues have meant we have been unable (so far) to develop a physical space. This has not stopped us from delivering the museum across the island, through projects, in pop-up spaces, on and offline, BUT, we now need a home. People who make donations and people who leave us a gift in their will can significantly open the door to this possibility, and leave a wonderful, lasting legacy for the generations to come.

We are happy to share our current plans with you and explain how you could make a real difference.

Patrick Michael Gaffney is credited with preserving the Fry Model Railway in Malahide for the state, after he left €1.5m towards a project to re-house it in a 17th century building in the heart of the village. The Fry collection – described as the largest model railway collection in Europe – was bought by Dublin Tourism in 1976 from the late railway engineer Cyril Fry’s widow and opened to the public in Malahide Castle in 1988. Following the redevelopment of the castle, there were difficulties finding a new home for the collection. Mr Gaffney’s €1.5m was essential in helping restore the 200-year-old abandoned Casino House in Malahide, which now houses the collection.

Why Make a Will?

Making a Will is the best way of ensuring that your wishes are met, and the people and causes you care about are looked after.

Write your Will online

To help you get started with writing a Will from the comfort of your own home, we’ve
teamed up with FreeWill Ireland, and their online partner Last Will to provide you with a free online Will writing service.

Yes, you can use your own solicitor to draw up your Will, although it’s unlikely to be free to do so.
Simply tell them you want to include a gift (residuary or cash) to Museum of Childhood Ireland n your Will and they will arrange it for you. Once completed, we would be grateful if you could let us know so that we can thank you, but you are under no obligation to do so. The most usual gifts are:

A sum of money, which can be any sum of money that suits your circumstances.
A percentage of the value of your estate – this is formally called a residuary gift. It can be from 1% to 100% of your estate – whatever suits your own circumstances. Even a small percentage would be a fabulous gift to celebrate childhood in Ireland.
Your solicitor should confirm the correct wording, but below is a sample wording to include a charitable bequest in a will:

For a gift of the residue of an estate:
“I give to (insert name of organisation) of (insert address of organisation), all (or a fraction) of the residue of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever, and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or
other officer for the time being of the said Organisation shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the same.”

For a gift of a fixed sum or specific item:
“I give the sum of €_ or I bequeath (the item specified) to (insert name of organisation) of (insert address of organisation), and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the said Organisation shall be proper and sufficient discharge for the same.”
Thank you for considering such a wonderful and life-changing gift.
Note: Gifts in wills are sometimes also called legacies or charitable bequests.

Tax Back Donations – Individuals

Tax back criteria
If you give €250 or more in one year, Museum of Childhood Ireland (MoCI) can claim an extra 45% in tax back on your generous donation. That means your gift of €250 is actually worth €362 to us – €112.33 extra; a gift of €500 is worth €725 and €1,000 is worth €1,450!
All you have to do is sign and return a Taxback form so we can claim this tax back and unlock these vital extra funds. In order for MoCI to claim tax back on your donations, you must have:
Donated €250 or more to MoCI in at least one calendar year (January–December) in the last four years.
Have paid tax (PAYE or self-assessed) for the relevant year(s).
Donated yourself directly, rather than sponsored a friend or taken part in a raffle or collection.
One form will now cover you for five years (after which you can renew your tax form either by email or phone – so less paperwork and less hassle!) You can download the CHY3 form below and additional information is also provided:
